Egyptian Lotus Drop Earrings

In between the two uprisings in Cairo in 2011 and 2012, I visited Egypt and took a boat up the Nile. Tourists had left and we had the wonders of Luxor, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel almost to ourselves. I photographed many images on columns and in tombs and was struck by how often the Lotus flower was depicted.

In Ancient Egypt, the lotus flower was revered as a symbol of the sun, creation, and rebirth and often appeared on tombs in the Valley of the Kings. The flower’s elegant, flowing shape and deep cultural significance felt like the perfect foundation for a jewellery collection.
